Dayton Pilates Classes

STOTT PILATES is a contemporary approach to the original exercise method pioneered by the late Joseph Pilates. All of our Pilates classes follow this methodology.

Pilates classes

STOTT PILATES incorporates modern exercise principles, and applies proven and accepted practices in biomechanics, rehabilitation and athletic performance enhancement. After realizing the benefits of the concepts of the original Pilates method, and in collaboration with a team of physical therapists/physiotherapists, sports medicine and exercise professionals, the Merrithews dissected and re-connected this unique form of exercise into a comprehensive, systematic, contemporary approach to the original teachings which is now reflected in today’s Pilates classes.

STOTT PILATES exercises are designed to restore the natural curves of the spine and re-balance the muscles around the joints. This involves placing more emphasis on pelvic and scapular stabilization, and integration of all the parts of the body into one. As well, preparatory exercises and modifications allow the technique to be appropriate for many different body types and abilities, making it applicable to sport-specific training and everyday life.

The Five Basic Principles

The following Five Basic Principles form the foundation of the method from which our education and all of our programming is developed for Pilates classes. Whether performed on a mat or on specialized equipment, application of the following biomechanical principles will ensure the realization of maximum benefits from Pilates exercises:

  1. Breathing
  2. Pelvic placement
  3. Rib cage placement
  4. Scapular movement
  5. Head & cervical spine placement

What are Group Reformer Classes?

Pilates group reformer classes

Group Reformer Classes take place on a piece of equipment with a moving carriage attached to springs for resistance.  This class is a small group setting which is a fun & social way to exercise.  It’s a full body workout, where the reformer can assist those with physical limitations or challenge the most fit individual.  You will build core strength, increase flexibility, coordination, improve posture and create long, lean muscle.  Pilates is great for adults (men & women), athletes, dancers, seniors, pre & post natal and for rehabilitation.  It’s recommended by doctors, chiropractors and physical therapists.  Classes are limited to 6 & some restrictions apply based on individual needs.

What are Cardio Jumpboard Classes?

Pilates Jumpboard classes

Cardio Jumpboard Classes are excellent for cardio enthusiasts!  This 45 minute interval training class will take you through various jumps lying on your back or side using the springs as resistance.  It is very low impact to the joints and will strengthen your feet, legs, butt, abdominals and endurance.  Most classes will incorporate upper body strengthening as well.  Get ready to sweat!

What are Pilates Mat Classes?

Mat Pilates classes

Pilates Mat exercises use the weight of the body as resistance as the instructor guides students through the various floor exercises.  For those who like to keep moving, this is a perfect, medium paced class that will keep you engaged and heart rate up.   You will strengthen and tone your abdominals, upper body, lower body as well as increase overall flexibility.  Extra props will be used during the class in the form of fitness circles, foam rollers, arc barrels, hand weights and stability balls to aid in toning and core strengthening.
