How Does Gyrotonic & Gyrokinesis compare with Pilates?
The techniques are complimentary with one another in that both coordinate movements with breath and awareness being the key to making transformational shifts in our bodies. In both systems, exercises can be performed either on a mat or on specialized resistance equipment (Pilates uses springs and Gyrotonic exercise uses weights). Both systems can be tailored to persons of any age or ability and will improve strength, flexibility and coordination.
Gyrotonic Exercise
The difference in the two modalities is that Pilates emphasizes body isolation and linear movements bringing form and closure to the body while focusing on a strong core or powerhouse. Pilates exercises are performed in a specific number of repetitions and attention is on the mind leading the body through intelligent exercise to provide a more balanced musculature, posture and movement efficiency.
Gyrotonic exercise emphasizes stabilization not just through a healthy core but also through expansion, traction and balanced contrast (think of pulling a tight rope taught from both ends). Rhythmic, continuous, dance-like movements are designed to warm the body, release the joint and provide a more optimal range of motion increasing the ease of movement in the body. Attention is placed not just on the muscular and skeletal structure, but also on the energy dynamics and meridians of the body.
